How to register your car in Spain

If you move to Spain and become a Spanish resident, you will need to register your vehicle in that country. From that moment on, you have six months to register your car. The procedure only changes if it is a new or used car purchased from a Spanish car dealer or imported from abroad.

Register a vehicle imported from abroad

When you bring a car or a motorcycle outside of Spain, you must register it within six months by going to Tráfico’s office and presenting the following documents:

All original documents relating to the vehicle

The invoice with a clearly indicated VAT number and proof of payment of VAT via the 309 or 300 model of the State Revenue Agency (Agencia Estatal Tributaria), only if the vehicle was purchased from a car dealer in another EU country .

When buying a new car, the words ” registration fees ” appear in the expenses. These are nothing more than registration management. With this money, we are paying the seller to take care of the registration of our car. It is possible to pay up to 500 euros for this procedure, but the process to obtain the license plate of our car is relatively simple and can be done within a few hours.

Here are five simple steps to follow:

Time needed: 15 days.

  1. Ask the seller or apply on this site for the COC

It is like your car’s identity card and contains the most important data, including the CO2 emissions figure, which is used to calculate the value of the tax of registration that you will go to pay.

  2. Pay for the 576 model

With this document, you first calculate what you have to pay, then the bank will provide you with an NRC code ( Full Reference Number ). The code is necessary to present the form 576; the fastest way to send this document is via the Internet through the Hacienda web page.

  3. Pay the “Impuesto de Circulación”

The circulation tax of the municipality in which you are about to register the car. The amount of this tax changes according to the municipality and the vehicle in question.

  4. Present the documentation at the “Tráfico” offices

Go to the provincial traffic office with the triplet and NIE, passport or residence permit. Here you will be issued the registration number and the final documentation. Among these documents, there will also be a circulation permit (94 euros).

  5. Put the license plates.

With the documentation as mentioned earlier, contact a spare parts dealer or a mechanic to put and fix the license plate on your car. The cost of this service can vary between 6 and 50 euros. Here we are!

Now you’ve done everything, and you can finally drive your car. If you have any question pls feel free to contact customer service that can help you with your registration problem
