All the information you need to import a vehicle to Italy.

Introduction
If you move to Italy and want to take your car with you, you need to be aware of some important information.
You must register the vehicle within the first twelve months.
Car registration is a long and arduous procedure, it requires some time to gather all the documentation, the whole process could take from six months to up to 10 months to be completed.
First steps:
- At the beginning, you can bring your car / motorcycle into Italy on its foreign plates, documents, and insurance.
- To register a foreign used car in Italy, it must first pass a test to ensure it conforms to Italian safety standards. A safety certificate will be issued to show that the vehicle meets national standards. For information concerning the test, you will need to contact the local Department of Motor Vehicles (Ufficio Provinciali della Motorizzazione Civile).
- The Ufficio Provinciale della Motorizzazione Civile will review and approve the original documentation that will need to be translated by the relevant Italian Authority, together with any other documentation that they may request.
- The Ufficio Provinciale della Motorizzazione Civile will contact you in order to do carry out the safety standard test for the vehicle.
- The final step of the importation process will be carried out at the Public Vehicle Register (Pubblico Registro Automobilistico/PRA).
- After that, the Bollo (Car Tax) will need to be paid, and you will need to choose an insurance company to cover the car / motorcycle.
Import a vehicle to Italy from non-EU countries
First step is to register the vehicle on the Provincial Motorization Office, after that is done, you can register the car on the Public Register of Motor Vehicles (PRA).
Registering the vehicle on PRA:
You need to submit the following documentation.
- Ownership certificate
If you are already the owner, and it is embodied on the foreign registration certificate, you should send the declaration of ownership with authenticated signature.
If the owner is someone else, you need to send a deed of sale with signature authenticated by a notary or public deed or sentence. - Personal identity document
If this document is in a foreign language an Italian translation must be attached (unless an exemption is applicable under international laws or agreements), certified as being a true and faithful rendition of the original document by the competent diplomatic or consular representative, or by an official translator. - Residence certificate of the applicant – unless residence is already indicated in the identity document.
- NP2B form for registration with the PRA, available at ACI-PRA offices, the provincial offices of Civil Motorization (UMC) and on the following website: http://www.aci.it. The purchaser’s tax code must be indicated in the form.
- Photocopy of the registration certificate issued in Italy.
Import a vehicle to Italy from EU countries
If you want to import a new vehicle, you need to present the following documentation:
- A photocopy of the owner’s ID.
If the document is in a foreign language, you need to attach an Italian translation (unless an exemption is applicable under international laws or agreements), certified as being a true and faithful of the original document by the competent diplomatic or consular representative, or by an official translator. - Residence certificate or “Declaration in Lieu of certification” (if residence is not on the ID)
- NP2B form for registration with the PRA, available at ACI-PRA offices, the provincial offices of Civil Motorization (UMC) and on the website http://www.aci.it. The purchaser’s tax code must be indicated in the form.
- Owner’s application form (Istanza dell’acquirente) or deed of sale or public deed or sentence.
- The deed of sale must bear the seller’s signature authenticated by a notary and revenue stamps.
- Declaration of conformity or European Certificate of Conformity with Italian type approval or European Certificate of Conformity accompanied by a “dichiarazione di immatricolazione” (statement of registration) issued by the manufacturer.
- TT 2119 application form signed by the owner, available at the provincial offices of civil Motorization (UMC).
- If the purchaser is a legal entity (company, body, association, etc.): Certificate of the Chamber of Commerce with revenue stamps or replacement declaration made by the legal representative to certify the registered office of the legal entity.
- If the owner is a non-EU citizen residing in italy, will need to present one of the following documents: a copy of a valid residence permit, a copy of the expired residence permit including a copy of the receipt of the application renewal, copy of the ID plus the receipt certifying application for the first issue of the residence permit or a copy of the EC residence permit for long-term residents.
- If the owner is a non-EU citizen relative to an EU citizen who is residing in Italy, you’ll need to present a copy of the “residence permit for relatives of an EU citizen” or a copy of the “permanent residence permit for relatives of EU citizens”.
- A request note to update the registration certificate.
If you want to import a used vehicle, you need to present the following documentation:
- A photocopy of the owner’s ID.
If the document is in a foreign language, you need to attach an Italian translation (unless an exemption is applicable under international laws or agreements), certified as being a true and faithful of the original document by the competent diplomatic or consular representative, or by an official translator. - Residence certificate or “Declaration in Lieu of certification” (if residence is not on the ID)

If the applicant is already the owner abroad and this is indicated in the foreign registration certificate, a declaration of ownership can be submitted with the signature authenticated by a notary or by a Municipality or by a Motorist’s Telematic Counter (STA). - Foreign Registration certificate original and a copy.
- TT 2119 application form signed by the owner, available at the provincial offices of civil Motorization (UMC).
- If the purchaser is a legal entity (company, body, association, etc.): Certificate of the Chamber of Commerce with revenue stamps or replacement declaration made by the legal representative to certify the registered office of the legal entity.
- If the owner is a non-EU citizen residing in Italy, will need to present one of the following documents: a copy of a valid residence permit, a copy of the expired residence permit including a copy of the receipt of the application renewal, copy of the ID plus the receipt certifying application for the first issue of the residence permit or a copy of the EC residence permit for long-term residents.

- If the vehicle first registration was in Germany up to 31-5-2004, the original ownership document (Fahrzeugbrief) must be submitted. If the vehicle was registered in Germany from 01-06-2004 onwards, a copy of the Fahrzeugbrief or a copy of the new ownership document (Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II) must be submitted.
